BITS Information Service, Don Mills, Ontario, publisher of the Directory
of Internet Providers and Services in Ontario 1996, has recently
completed a survey of the Internet industry in Canada to identify the
breakdown in subscriber base, profile of the companies, and most widely
used Web servers, platforms and connectivity equipment.
The highlights of the results are as follows:
AT&T, Ascend, Bay Network, Cardinal, Cisco, Gandalf, GVC, Hayes,
Livingston, Motorola, Telebit and USR are the leading vendors in
connectivity equipment (modems, routers and communication servers)
Apache is the most popular free Web server
Netscape's servers are the most widely used commercial Web servers
Intel-based machines and UNIX variants are the choice platforms for the
majority of those surveyed
About 80% operated with 3000 or less subscribers at the end of June.
The results and the profiles of the Internet companies, which have so
graciously agreed to share information about their Internet operations
with the nation, are now published in
NATIONAL SURVEY OF THE INTERNET INDUSTRY IN CANADA
SONDAGE NATIONAL SUR L'INDUSTRIE DE L'INTERNET AU CANADA.
