March 21 will mark the 37th anniversary of the Sharpville massacre in South Africa, where peaceful demonstrators against apartheid were wounded and killed. In 1966, to commemorate this tragic event and to nurture the critical need to foster harmonious race relations, the United Nations declared March 21 the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Young Peoples Press is looking for as many articles as possible on an anti-racism theme, to tie in with the March 21 International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Our experience has shown that articles based on personal experience are most effective and most likely to be published. Although we would like articles by March 21, we will be accepting them until the end of April. What is Young Peoples Press? YPP is a news service which provides stories to the media written by young people. Contributors work directly with an experienced journalist or correspond by fax or e-mail. The journalist provides advice and feedback on their story suggestions and drafts, disseminates their stories to the appropriate media--daily newspapers or community weeklies, and adds the articles to the YPP web site on the Internet (http://westview.org/ypp). Why participate? This is an opportunity to have your voice heard. You may also improve your research and interviewing skills, enhance your writing and editing capabilities, and, when published, have something extra to add to your resume. How do you reach us? Young Peoples Press has two offices. You can reach the Northern Ontario office at ccsj@onlink.net or the Toronto office at yppto@planeteer.com. We hope to hear from you soon. Lori Beckerton
