I have permission from John Wiley & Sons to distribute an excerpt from Ian Stewart's new book, "The Magical Maze." Stewart has been a tireless advocate of making math more accessible to the masses, as recognized by a 1995 Royal Society of England Michael Faraday Medal for outstanding contributions to the public understanding of science. Stewart is the author of numerous popular books on mathematics, including "Nature's Numbers" and "Does God Play Dice?" He writes the column "Mathematical Recreations" for Scientific American magazine, is a mathematics consultant for New Scientist magazine, and contributes regularly to Discover and The Sciences. The excerpt I'm distributing is called "The Mathematical Maze." It quickly goes to the core of Stewart's new book: the difference between "axioms" and so-called "truths," and how this difference affects not only mathematical inquiries but the solving of all sorts of human puzzles. To get the excerpt, please send mailto:IPS@olympus.net with the subject line "Send Stewart" and I'll reply with the file. Thank you.
