I am wondering if anyone has information on topics for an essay or research paper for high school Math students to do in a Calculus course or a Finite Math course (Permutations/Combinations/Matrices). At the school where I work, the Principal is making it mandatory to have an essay in every course. As math teachers, we are racking our brains for ideas so that we can incorporate this policy into our classes. Any help or WWW links would be very helpful. ------------------------------------------------------ Darren Greenspoon Head of Mathematics Westmount Collegiate Institute Thornhill, Ontario, Canada dgreensp@wmnt.yrbe.edu.on.ca ---------------------------- e-mail the k12.ed.math moderator at kem-moderator@thinkspot.net submissions: post to k12.ed.math or e-mail to k12math@sd28.bc.ca newsgroup website: http://www.thinkspot.net/k12math/ newsgroup charter: http://www.thinkspot.net/k12math/charter.html

Darren: I am not quite sure what you are looking for, but almost every calculus book written in the last five years has essay topics and extended project ideas included at the ends of chapters. That is one of the big issues with math reformers, and since most books want a share of that market,... There are also numerous books published by the Math Association of America on calculus and collegiate math enrichment, and I am sure that you would find plenty of ideas there. The MAA website is probably www.maa.org, and I suspect that you can reach it through www.ams.org , the American Math Society website. In addition, try browsing through back issues of the Math Monthly, the College Math Journal, Math Horizons, ... The resources are there if you invest the time. On my Math Links Page at http://www.thinkspot.net/sheila/math/ I have, a little more than halfway down the page, several links to Writing in Mathematics type websites. Check them out. At the MAA website, in their on-line bookstore, you might also find stuff. Here is some: http://www.maa.org/pubs/books/nte16.html http://www.maa.org/pubs/books/nte47.html http://www.maa.org/pubs/books/srpc.html Hope this helps, Sheila King sheila@thinkspot.net http://www.thinkspot.net/sheila/ On Sat, 25 Sep 1999 23:20:30 GMT, "Darren Greenspoon" <dgreensp@wmnt.yrbe.edu.on.ca> wrote in k12.ed.math in article <37f75775.7624136@news.gte.net>: :I am wondering if anyone has information on topics for an essay or research :paper for high school Math students to do in a Calculus course or a Finite :Math course (Permutations/Combinations/Matrices). Essays are a great place to talk about the history of any subject including mathematics. You may want to get students to explore certain historical aspects of the material you are covering. A colleague was wondering recently what was the use of teaching permutations and combinations when there are calculators which will calculate these results for them. I suggested an essay: Distinguish between permutations and combinations using examples and showing calculations. Also remember that proof is essay--especially when doctored up as paragraph proof--and so is flowcharting. Redefine "essay" to meet your own needs. Remember your responsibility as a mathematician: if you don't like to work within the confines of a category such as "essay" then redefine and rename the catgory for your own purposes.
