I need help with the following question A rectangular Field is to be enclosed and divided into two separate areas (the areas are not necessaritly equal). Find the minimum fencing that is required if the total area is to be 1200m squared.

Find the minimum fencing : that is required if the total area is to be 1200m squared. This is a standard question which is probably found int EVERY calculus text in print. A process for solving it will also solve most of the other problems in the text: 1) Make a diagram of the field (or rather the fences). 2) Label one side of the field 'x'. 3a) Use the given information to write a formula for the other side. 3b) Finish labeling all the sections of fence with formulas in terms of 'x'. 4) Write a formula for the total amount of fencing used. 5) Take the derivative of your formula, and find all the zeros of that expression (critical points), along with any endpoints/undefined points. (x=0 and x=infinity in this problem.) 6) Check all the points from (5) to see which is smallest (since this is a "minimize" problem). This smallest number is your answer. |\/| || Burnaby South Secondary School | |orewood@planeteer.com || Beautiful British Columbia Mathematics & Computer Science || (Canada)
