A Philadelphia school in the Northeast Region of it's city is setting up a new project. It is called the Jr. Townwatch program. A townwatch is where people in the area, patrol their neighborhhoods. They hopefully lower crime and vandalism during weekend hours, before or after work and some even do it during the work day. Well, we are setting up a program that will deal with the children and have them establish a partnership with the local police department, environmental programs, ecology programs, etc.... During their day they will be on graffiti alert, looking for tags that are ruining our neighborhood. During the weekend they will take a city training course teaching them about, community policing, peer mediation, park clean up and water testing. The kids will also take classes to learn about CPR and first aid. They will tour and learn about all the hardworking units within the Philadelphia Police Department and see how 911 works. The hope and goal of this project is that the kids will see the police as a viable profession and that it is easier to work within the law then against it. Our future is in their hands. Hopefully we can teach them to be responsible, caring and giving young men and young women. If you have any suggestions or ideas please e-mail me at. charlene.dunne@gte.net Oxford Circle Townwatch
