DO ANY OF THESE SOUND FAMILIAR?
One of your friends or relatives or even yourself have been arrested for an
alleged crime
and thrown in jail?
Bail was set but you were not able to meet it to free yourself?
Maybe no bail was set and you had to sit in jail for weeks or months waiting
for trial?
Do you know someone who is sitting in a jail cell maybe too far away for you to
be able
to visit?
Maybe someone you know is even in a local jail near you but youre too
terrified to go
visit or maybe it would just break your heart to see them in such a setting?
Maybe youve tried to get a good lawyer to work on your behalf but you just
cant afford
to pay such a large amount of money. Maybe youve gotten stuck with a public
defender
who refers to you as a case number and is so overworked that you rarely hear
from him?
During all these processes comes a lot of waiting time.
Lives are torn apart, jobs and income are lost, reputations are ruined and this
is just the
beginning.
What about the time spent staring at 3 walls and a cell door in these
godforsaken places?
Nothing to do and no one that you know or love to talk to. Your mind works
overtime
worrying about everything that you were torn away from and the problems known
and
unknown that lie ahead of you.
Maybe you even know you are innocent and falsely accused by a bad cop or a
vengeful
enemy. But you are locked up with no way to even begin to help yourself until
the wheels
of justice slowly begin to turn.
Destitution and frustration set in to make matters even worse. You have a need
for so
many things, mostly little things that would put your mind so much more at
ease.It might
be a phone call to your family or a friend. Maybe a pack of cigarettes or a
book or
magazine that youd especially enjoy. Maybe a visit from a friend or
relative,if you have
any, would really make your day. Even a visit from any friendly face or someone
who can
help you take care of any unfinished business you may have on the outside would
help so
much.
Life is especially hard for first time prisoners. The experience can be
brutal,physically
and emotionally especially when you dont know how long youll be spending in
that
jail cell. Mistreatment by the police and other inmates is a rule rather than
the exception.
These and many other scenarios are part of being arrested and thrown in jail.
This can
happen to anyone. Think about it!
Thats why we decided to form the Prisoner Assistance Task Force! But to make it
work
we need you!
These are just a few of the goals our new organization would like to accomplish
in the
year 1998...
1) Establish a Bail and Legal Fund to be used to pay for prisoner bail and
legal expenses
and to be managed and distributed by a local bank.
2) Begin a special force of caring volunteers to visit local and county jails a
few times
each week to lift the spirits of the inmates as high as possible considering
the conditions
in which they are forced to live. Provide critically needed support and
material items that
prisoners may not be able to obtain on their own.
3) Create a Phone Tree to keep all volunteers up to date on new
developments,new
ideas,and notifications of special meetings.
Can you think of other services that the Prisoner Assistance Task Force could
provide?
We need ideas, funds, and most of all we need real people who care about other
less
fortunate people, friends and strangers alike. We need people willing to make
jail
visits, make phone calls, organize meetings and fund drives, and many other tasks.
We need everyone....working people,unemployed people,retired
couples,individuals,
high school people and absolutely anyone who cares to give a little of their
time to such
a valuable and needed organization.
If youve ever been in jail or know someone who has been, then you know first
hand
the horrors and anguish of being in such a situation and understand the need
for the
work we wish to do.
If youd like to know more and possibly help create this new organization, take
a minute
now and give us a call. We are planning a first meeting in the near future and
need all the
people we can gather to come and talk and throw ideas around.
You can reach our voicemail that we have set up specifically for creation of
the Prisoners
Assistance Task Force. It is available 24 hours a day. The number is
518-341-3138.
We can also receive E-Mail at: PrisonerAssistance@juno.com
Please consider calling us. We need you to make this happen! We need you to
make a
difference!
