He transferred to the Albany Academy and graduated with honors, having meanwhile become a teacher there himself and lecturing at the newly-established Renesselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy NY. Union College in Schenectady granted Joseph Henry an honorary masters degree in 1829. Joseph Henry developed and created the modern electromagnet, the first telegraph, the first electric motor, the first electrical transformer, the first industrial application of electricity with his iron ore extractor in Ironville NY, and he discovered the phenomenon of induction which is now measured in units of "Henrys". 50 years before Marconi introduced his practical radio, the first recorded experiments on radio transmission were pioneered and conducted by Joseph Henry while at Princeton University. Today the telephone, radio, television, magnetic resonance imaging and the digital electronic computer are ALL based on Joseph Henry's accomplishments. Joseph Henry consulted with Congress and formulated the plan of operation for the creation of the Smithsonian Institution and became it's first secretary.
