Family Forest Fair '98 will be held on Saturday, Oct. 3 (9am - 5pm)
and Sunday, Oct. 4 (10 am - 4pm) at the Washington County Fairgrounds
on Route 29, about 13 miles east of Saratoga Springs, NY.
The theme of the fair is recognition of the many benefits of New York's
forests -- clean air and water, habitat for wildlife, erosion control,
wood products, visual beauty, and recreation. The Family Forest Fair,
given by the non-profit New York Forest Owners Association, is
co-sponsored by NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and Cornell
Cooperative Extension.
Over 100 environmental organizations, agencies, woodcrafters, and
vendors of wood-related products will have exhibits and demonstrate the
importance of forests. Crafts made from forest products, from rustic
furniture to children's toys, will be available for purchase. Several
colleges will have representatives with information about environmental
programs.
Informative exhibits manned by experts in their fields will include
urban wildlife, forest herbs and their uses, suburban landscaping, and
fine arts relating to forestry. There will be demonstrations of portable
sawmills, live rattlesnakes, wood flute performances, and a bald eagle
presentation.
Smokey Bear will entertain kids of all ages as they make crafts such
as paper hats, sawdust paintings, wood sculpture, and "barking" demons in
the "Children's Magical Forest." There will be a leaf and tree
identification maze, and Flag Acres Zoo will have a live bobcat and lynx.
Chainsaw Awareness Month will be highlighted with a safety
demonstration by John Adler, from Logger Training, Inc. on Saturday at 2
pm. This instructional demonstration is a must-see event for anyone who
uses a chainsaw, if only to prune a backyard tree.
On Sunday (11am - 4pm) the New York Professional Lumberjack
competition finals will be at the fair for the first time. "Lumberjills"
will also compete at this exciting event.
Many door prizes will be awarded, including free tree seedlings to
the first 1000 attendees. Admission each day is $3 for adults, with no
charge for children and free parking. Food will be available on the
grounds.
