The Capital District Chapter of the New York Forest Owners Association is sponsoring a Pine Bush Woodswalk on SUNDAY, April 11, at 2 pm (rain or shine). The public is invited, and there is no charge. The hike will begin near the intersection of NYS Route 155 (Karner Road) and Washington Avenue Extension. From the traffic light on Route 155, proceed on Washington Ave Ext (towards Albany) for 0.3 miles, turn right before you reach the next traffic light, and double back towards Route 155 on the dirt road, where we will park our cars. Watch for yellow and green NYFOA signs. (For those unfamiliar with the area, Karner Road runs between Central Ave (Route 5) in Colonie, and Western Ave (Route 20) in Guilderland. Comments: Someday, the Albany Pine Bush will be the Capital District's Central Park, but much bigger. Come see this suburban woodland/pine barrens and learn about how it came to be and how it operates in today's busy urban/suburban environment. We'll spend two hours at this site with Willie Janeway (Executive Director of the Albany Pine Bush Preserve) and Jim Beil (Assistant Director of NYS DEC Division of Lands & Forests) to discuss Pine Bush ecology and politics, its endangered species and its tree species. The Pine Bush Preserve plays a significant role in the future of forest and open space management in NYS and the nation. Hundreds of thousands of people live within 10 miles of the Pine Bush and tens of thousands travel through it daily. Crossgates Mall sits in it and the NYS Thruway passes right through it.
