They claim it's because of cost increases, but given >the current rate of inflation, I find that hard to believe. If you pay full price for a Hoyts movie, you're crazy. It's far better to buy their Cinema Cash, which costs $50 for a book for 10 tickets. That also includes 10 coupons for $1 off their outrageously overpriced refreshments, so it really comes out to $4 per ticket. Personally, I'm more upset that Hoyts has raised the price of its refreshments and decreased the size of its "small" sodas and popcorn. I doubt that ticket prices are driven by costs. Film distributors typically get a percentage of the gross box office receipts. Ticket prices, like everything else, are driven by market forces. Hoyts has a monopoly in this area, and they charge as much as people are willing to pay. Simple as that. By the way, I'm pretty sure that theaters make most of their money from selling refreshments. Stuff like popcorn and soda are almost pure profit. If you want to save money, bring your own food. -- Joe Schwartz E-mail: xor@acm.rpi.edu MapInfo Corp. 200 Broadway Disclaimer: "Everything I know is wrong."
