If it's a complete X server, the answer is EXCEED.EXE -query name.of.linux.host this works if xdm or kdm is running on the linux host and no security has been configured. This is called an XDMCP query: the linux host (client) will then manage the complete graphical area of the windows box (server). If this is inappropriate and/or the EXCEED.EXE software is a so-nice program-with-buttons-everywhere-and-you-cannot-find-XDMCP-client functionnality, then, alternatively, from the MS-* box do telnet name.of.linux.host then when connected (assuming bash) do xterm -display windows.box.name:0 if this work, you can also launch fvwm2 or kde that way. If it doesn't, either set the cookie on the Linux machine (with xauth) or do the MS-* equivalent of xhost +name.of.linux.host
