Title: Extending CORBA For Multi-Domain Management

Abstract:

Several proposals exist for CORBA-based management of CORBA-, CMIP- or
SNMP-based managed systems. These follow a more or less static
approach when mapping a specific model to CORBA.

The talk will present an overview of GOM (Generic Object Model) which
tries to achieve the same goals as the static approaches, but employs
a dynamic, runtime-based scheme. An overview of the 3 key elements
(generic object model, adapters, extended interface reporitory) will
be given.

Bela Ban is a Research Scientist at IBM Zurich Research Laboratory and a
PhD
student at the University of Zurich (Information Management Research
Group of
Prof. Bauknecht and the Systems Architecture & Software Group of
Prof. Richter).

Title: Modern Network Management

Abstract:

The advent of the WWW offered a new way to manage networks in a simple
and platform-independent fashion, partially by exploiting services
offered by conventional management platforms. New technologies now
allow to go beyond this. VRML allows people to easily create 3D
representations of network elements, Java to enable the creation of
light and portable management applications and CORBA to enable the
creation of distributed applications. In this talk all the mentioned
aspects are covered and it shown in detail how they have been
implemented in Webbin, a new platform for network management developed
at the IBM Zurich Laboratory.

Luca Deri is a Research Scientist at IBM Zurich Research Laboratory
and a PhD Student at the University of Berne (group of Prof. Oscar
Nierstrasz). As you might expect, he is Italian. He was born and
brought up in Pisa (Tuscany). He have studied Computer Science and
then after the graduation he has worked for a while in Tecsiel
S.p.A. in Pisa then he moved to the UCL (University College of London)
before joining the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory. He's amember of the
Telefono Azzurro (Help Line for Children) and a supporter of
F.C. Inter and of Pisa Calcio as well.
