Abstract
========
The ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest is an activity of the
ACM, the "First Society of Computing", that provides university students with
an opportunity to demonstrate and sharpen their problem solving and
computing skills.
Apart from the fun of competing (and hopefully winning), the Contest also
provides an excellent opportunity for making international contacts in
Computing Science.
The Contest is a two-tiered competition among teams of students
representing institutions of higher education. The winning teams of the
Regional Contests (held from mid-October to mid-December each year) will
advance to the Contest Finals which are held in conjunction with the ACM
Computer Science Conference.
This document gives an overview on the Southwestern European Regional
Programming Contest. For further information, please consult our Web-Pages
(http://www.acm.inf.ethz.ch).
Outline of The Event
====================
The Southwestern European Regional Programming Contest is one of some
twenty Regional Programming Contests to select teams that will represent
each Region at the Finals. The Contest Finals will be held in San Jose
(CA), USA, at the beginning of March 97 in conjunction with the ACM Computer
Science Conference.
The Southwestern European Regional Programming Contest is organised by the ACM
Southwestern European Regional Contest Organization Committee under the
patronages of the Department and Division of Computer Science at the Swiss
Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zuerich and the Swiss Informaticians
Society (Schweizerische Informatikergesellschaft), the Swiss ACM Chapter.
This Contest will run over two days: Friday and Saturday, the 15th and 16th
of November 1996.
To allow the participation for as much institutions as possible, we decided
to have two sites for this Contest: ETH Zuerich (Switzerland) and
Universidad da Valladolid (Spain). Both sites will hold the contest at the
same time, use the same problem set and have a common ranklist. Participants
therefore are free to choose their preferred site.
The Friday morning is at the disposal of the teams. After registration
before noon, lunch will be served in the university cafeteria. The
afternoon will be reserved for a practice session to get acquainted with
the Contest environment (Networked UNIX Workstations).
The evening will feature an optional social event.
On Saturday morning, the actual Contest will take place from 09:00 to 14:00
(The begin and end time are subject to change; but in any case, the Contest
lasts exactly five hours). Each team, composed of up to three students,
will get a set of six to eight problems which they have to solve on one
computer, programming either in ANSI-C or ISO-Pascal or C++. During the whole
Contest, a buffet lunch will be provided. In the evening, a Social Event
(motto: "Free Cheese for All!") will be offered to all participants and their
coaches, and the winning teams will be announced.
To get an idea of what kind of problems will be posed, have a look at our
Problem Set Archive (available via Web).
A team consists of up to three contestants. Each contestant must be a
student enrolled in a degree program at his institution with at
least half-time load. At least two contestants must be undergraduate
students. No contestant may have completed two years of post-baccalaureate
studies or hold a graduate degree.
