Graduate Program in Communication Systems
(Preparation for Doctoral Studies)
Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL),
Switzerland
Academic Year 1996 - 1997
1.Outline
The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne is announcing
a new graduate program in Communication Systems. The program, which bridges
Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, covers the basic and more
advanced topics central to communication systems.
The one year program consists of 2 formal courses covering the core of
communications systems (courses SSC-D01 and SSC-D02) and at least two
advanced topics. In addition, the student is required to take 2 project
courses as an introduction to independent research.
Successful completion of the program leads to a Certificate. The
program is also the preparation for the preliminary exam for the doctorate
in Communication Systems at EPFL.
2. Calendar
Applications to this program by well qualified candidates are
invited by June 1st, 1996.
Courses are from October 1996 to June 1997.
3. Fellowships
20 fellowships of 2500 Swiss Francs per month for a period of 9 to
12 months will be offered on a competitive basis.
4. Graduate Course Offering in Communication Systems, 1996-97 (Doctoral School)
Winter Semester 1996-97 (October-February)
SSC-D01 Communication Systems I: Communication and Information Theory
Prof. Martin Vetterli (2 hours/week)
Fundamentals of communication and information theory. Lossless and
lossy source coding. Channel coding, error correction and modulation.
Separation principle. Security and cryptography.
SSC-D11 Advanced Digital Image Processing
Prof. Murat Kunt (2 hours/week)
Understanding the fundamentals of Digital Image Processing.
Understanding and mastering algorithms to implement major
image processing methods. Acquiring knowledge and insight on
applications and the human visual system
SSC-D21 Nonlinear Systems
Prof. Martin Hasler (2 hours/week)
Basic notions in nonlinear systems theory. Being familiar with the
main nonlinear phenomena. Knowledge of the tools for the qualitative
analysis of static and dynamic nonlinear systems. Knowledge about the
analysis of weakly nonlinear systems by series expansions.
SSC-D51 Advanced Virtual Reality Systems and Telepresence
Prof. Daniel Thalmann (2 hours/week)
Understanding the fundamentals of Virtual Reality Systems,
Networked VR Systems, TelePresence, TeleOperation, Virtual
Bodies and Actors.
SSC-D91 Communication Systems Project I: State of the Art, various faculty
Prof. Jean-Pierre Hubaux (coordination)
The goal of this project (which is part of a two semester
sequence), is to get aquainted with a research field by studying
the state of the art in the literature, and then to start an
original research project under the guidance of a faculty member.
SSC-D99 SSC Seminar Series
(1 hour/week, staff)
Weekly seminar series with inside and outside speakers.
Summer Semester 1997 (March-June)
SSC-D02 Communication Systems II: Networking and Analysis
Prof. Jean-Yves LeBoudec (3 hours/week)
Fundamentals of networks (TCP/IP, ATM). Mathematical tools required for
network analysis (Markov modelling, large deviations, optimization).
Network control issues: datagram networks, virtual circuit networks.
SSC-D12 Advanced Signal Processing: Wavelets and Applications
Prof. Martin Vetterli (2 hours/week)
Fundamentals of wavelet theory in continuous and discrete-time.
Understanding of the algorithmic aspects of wavelets and related
methods. Knowledge of some important applications of these tools
(e.g. compression and communication).
SSC-D31 Specification and Verification of Reactive and Concurrent Systems
Prof. Claude Petitpierre (2 hours/week)
Design, construction and analysis of reactive systems. Temporal
logic and application to the specification, verification, and
development of reactive systems, particularly communicating systems.
Usage of Step for specification.
SSC-D41 Telecommunications Services
