The new procedure for domain name registration is now active since nearly four months. During this period some experience could be gained by all parties involved and we would like to encourage discussion on this topic again in order to improve, change, clarify, etc. things. What has been observed from the registry point of view: 1. Some registrants are actually hoarding names for no obvious reasons, domain names are treated as prestige objects by some registrants. 2. Some registrants are registering names in order to attract business, the so called Novartis effect. The term business could refer to selling names or to just trying to 'bind' an organization. 3. Some registrants have registered names without any right to such a name. There have been various reasons for this behavior, from trying to do damage to not reading or comprehending the rules. 4. Billing contacts asking the registry why they receive invoices, this even when the billing contact is identical with the admin and org entries. 5. Some not-for-profit organizations are asking for registrations/leases to be made at no cost. Please submit your own observations and comment. Marcel Schneider@SWITCH
