The registration of a domain has almost nothing to do with reachability. There are even RFCs that suggest that a network be registered before, if ever, it is connected to the Internet; to avoid a renumbering should such a connection happen. Even if a network is connected to the Internet, there is no obligation whatsoever to run an E-Mail service of any sort, all that is required is a zone contact, and that may be at another organization. An organization could decide to use only proprietary application level protocols; as long as these use the TCP/IP suite for transport over the Internet, that's OK. +--------------- Andi Karrer, Institute for Electronics, ETH Zuerich, Switzerland _Sein_ ist schwieriger und wird deshalb gern durch Worte ersetzt. - C.G.
