Marc>> o Swiss Universities and ETH/EPF pay for incoming traffic even for Marc>> Swiss-only traffic (so even to the SWITCH FTP server, or an Marc>> hypothetic WWW cache). I just called SWITCH, and was given confirmation that this is in fact the case: there is *currently* no distinction between traffic coming in from other SWITCH sites and from external networks, as far as cost distribution is concerned. I was also told that this non-distinction is subject to ongoing debate, so the rules might change in the future. Marc> This is wrong, according to someone not at SWITCH. According to someone at SWITCH it was correct :-) Marc> Please note that SWITCH did not even contact me or reply to my Marc> mail asking for this. Marc> However, I still wonder why there is no *.ch [WWW] cache: in Marc> France, there is already a movement towards insitutional, Marc> regional, country and international cache systems. Different political traditions maybe (federalistic vs. centralized). Just kidding. But a *.ch cache wouldn't help that many users because there are very few points of exchange in Switzerland between the different IP service providers operating here. So currently it makes more sense to have WWW caches at the provider/POP or organization level. Having one at SWITCH could probably save some traffic. It could be used to funnel existing caches at member organizations in order to keep additional load on SWITCH resources low. -- Simon.
