Universitaet Bern Institut fuer Informatik und angewandte Mathematik Einladung zum Informatik-Kolloquium Dienstag, 3. Februar 1998, 17.15 Uhr in der Uni Engehalde, Engehaldenstrasse 8, 3012 Bern, Hoersaal 001 (1. UG) Prof. Theo D'Hondt Programming Technology Lab, Brussels Free University, Belgium A framework approach to inheritance Abstract: In prototype based languages, "higher-order" methods (i.e. prototype-valued methods) can be used to define an inheritance structure with a finer grain than usually found in class-based languages (modular inheritance). Moreover, building blocks for frameworks (such as overriding, abstract methods, ...) can be applied to structure inheritance in such a system. This idea is explored in the seminar as follows: first modular inheritance is defined in the context of a very simple object model. This model is used to show how modular inheritance actually operates. Next, a number of experiments show how it can be given a framework-like structure. Finally, the impact from this property of modular inheritance on more conventional systems is assessed. -- Kind regards, Oscar Nierstrasz --- Prof. Dr. Oscar Nierstrasz; oscar@iam.unibe.ch; http://www.iam.unibe.ch/~oscar Software Composition Group; CS Inst., U.
