ABSTRACT

The Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture Consortium
(TINA-C)
is a consortium formed by leading network operators, telecommunications
equipment manufacturers, and computer manufacturers with the goal to
define a
common software architecture for multimedia telecommunications and
information
services. Major outcomes of that effort will be:

(i) the TINA Service Architecture comprising a set of principles for
constructing, providing, and operating multimedia telecommunications and
information services,

(ii) the TINA Network Resource Architecture for technology-independent
modeling of connections management,

(iii) the TINA Computing Architecture which defines the object-oriented
modeling concepts and the distributed processing environment for the
creation
and operation of service components and systems and

(iv) the definition of Reference Points specifying conformance
requirements
for interworking across domain boundaries.

Demonstrations of TINA-C achievements in the form of global field trials
are
planned by major member companies of the TINA-Consortium for this year
and
1998 under the label The TINA Trial (TTT). One such trial (in the
context of
TTT) is currently prepared by Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom, Sprint,
and
Global One. These four companies are engaged in a trans-oceanic field
trial of
telecommunications and informations services developed according to the
TINA-C
Service Architecture on top of a CORBA-based distributed processing
environment (DPE) spanning sites of all 4 partners.
The resulting global service infrastructure should be open and
programmable
allowing

(i) to reuse service components from different sources and
(ii) to operate services distributed over multiple provider domains.

As an important outcome of this trial a test of interoperability
involving a
multitude of different CORBA ORB products will evaluate the usefulness
of
CORBA 2.0 standards/products as a basis for large, globally distributed,
object-oriented service environments. Computational objects built on the
chosen TINA middleware have been distributed on a global scale to gain
insight in performance-related issues of CORBA-based TINA service
components

CV of Tim Eckardt

Tim Eckardt is employed as a Project Manager at GMD/FOKUS in Berlin,
Germany
He received his masters in computer sciences from the Technical
University of
Berlin in 1993. He has been involved in research projects related to
Intelligent Network, UPT, TMN, OMG/CORBA, TINA-C, and personal
communications.

Tim Eckardt has been the technical project manager for the "PCS in TINA"
TINA-C auxiliary project performed on behalf of Deutsche Telekom by GMD
FOKUS.
Since 1997 he is actively involved in the TINA-C field trial of Deutsche
Telekom, France Telecom, and Sprint where he is a task leader
responsible for
one of the demonstration service scenarios involving legacy-to-TINA
system
interworking.

Tim Eckardt is member of IEEE. He is the author of several papers
related to
IN/TMN integration, inter-domain management, personal communications,
Intelligent Agents, and personal communications-related aspects of the
TINA
service architecture.
