You may have already seen this announcement. This is an update to
confirm that the afternoon round table will indeed happen, with some
interesting topics to be discussed... See below.

| Seminar and Round Table on |
| Open Distributed Systems Management |
+------------------------------------------------------+
Thursday, February the 15th, 1996
PTT-Telecom Research Center, Main Conference Room
Ostermundigen (Bern)
Seminar (morning)
=======
The Swiss Telecom-PTT, the company AEG-ATM (Konstanz, Germany) and the
Industrial Computing Laboratory of EPFL will present the results of their
work in
+ the ESPRIT III project # 7026 (Open Distributed Systems Management
- "SysMan")
+ and the F+E project #286 (Architecture of Distributed Systems
for the Management of Networks and Systems).
Keywords: OSI Systems Management Architecture, SNMP, CORBA, ODP, ODMA,
CMIS, GDMO, Object Models, Protocol and Specification Translation,
Monitoring, Domains and Policies, Configuration, Security.
Round Table (afternoon, subject to participation)
===========
The afternoon will be dedicated to a round table on systems management
in Switzerland. The aim of this mini-workshop is to find out who is doing
what in network and systems management in Switzerland, and to discuss the
problems and solutions adopted. The main focus will be on protocols and
modelling notations for management (CMIP, GDMO, CORBA, IDL, OIDL, SNMP).
Participants will be invited to make a small presentation (~10-15 minutes).
Interested people from academia or industry should contact Guy Genilloud
(guy.genilloud@litsun.epfl.ch, tel. 021 693 46 57) to register to this
round table, and to discuss their interest and possible contribution.
Program
=======
9:30H - Welcome, Introduction to the seminar
Andre Prim, Marc Zweiacker, Telecom PTT
9:40H - An overview of the SysMan project (AEG)
Dr. Andrzej Debski
Ekkehard Janas
+ Effective management integrates network, system and
application management
+ The OSI management architecture, and CORBA, constitute
together a modern framework for the implementation
of an affordable management toolset
+ The Monitoring Service is the architectural key
component of the SysMan management toolset
10:20H - Introduction to EPFL's work in SysMan (EPFL)
Guy Genilloud, EPFL-LIT
+ Enabling the management of ANSA (CORBA) applications
+ Enabling the implementation of dedicated management
programs -- these programs are ANSA (CORBA) based
and can easily be distributed
10:40H - Presentations of demos (EPFL + AEG)
10:50H - Long break (including demonstrations)
11:20H - Questions about the SysMan platform
11:30H - Systems Management: CMIP vs CORBA
Guy Genilloud, EPFL-LIT
+ Overview of standard activities in this area
+ Translation of Object Specifications
+ Translation of Interactions (protocol adapters)
12:15H - Overview of the future project
Gregoire Jaunin, EPFL-LIT
12:30H - Questions
Demontrations (continued, if necessary)
Lunch
14:15H - Round table on Systems Management
Focus on current protocols and modelling notations
(CMIP, GDMO, CORBA, IDL, OIDL, SNMP)
The program will consist of short presentations and discussions.
Short presentations will include:
==> "Towards An Object-Oriented Framework For Multi-Domain Management"
Bela Ban, IBM Zurich Research Laboratory
The CORBA architecture can be enhanced to allow transparent
access to other systems (e.g. OSI). The approach chosen is based
on a generic object model that encapsulates Corba's Dynamic
Invocation Interface (DII) with a high-level and more abstract
(and easier-to-use) API. Other important components are special
object adapters and an extended interface repository (EIR).
The originality of our proposal is that it focuses on a dynamic,
runtime-based approach.
==> "Surfin' Network Resources across the Web"
Luca Deri, IBM Zurich Research Laboratory
The power of the world-wide-web can be applied to reduce the
complexity of network management. The presentation will outline the
architecture and implementation of two new network management
applications which are accessible through the web.
==> "Network Management at Ascom Hasler AG"
Hanspeter Lutz, Ascom Hasler AG
- Development of Information Models using GDMO/ASN.1
- Development of generic and reusable OO-manager/agent software.

Travel Directions
=================
It is a good idea to come to the PTT-Telecom research center by train and bus.
From the train station in Bern, take bus no. 15 (there is only one direction).
Leave the bus at the WALDECK bus stop. The bus trip will take between 10 and
15 minutes.
If you come by car, leave the highway at the WANKDORF exit (direction THUN).
Then follow the signs Ostermundigen. The PTT-Telecom research center is the
tallest building around - you can't miss it. Try to come early as parking
space is very limited near the research center.
Participation is free
