I am a Grade 12 Student at Horton District High in Nova Scotia.
A friend of mine and I would like to do a Chemistry project on the ozone
layer. To do this, we had decided to try to simulateupper atmosphere
conditions (low pressure / low temperature) within a flask containing
appropriate amounts of major gases found at that elevation (30 km up). We
wanted to expose these gases to ultraviolet radation at similar levels which
would be present at this altitude also. Once these conditions were
established, we were going to investigate the equlibrium constant and relative
concentrations of oxygen to ozone, since there is an equilibrium between the
two species.
There are two main problems which we are experiencing with this
procedure. One is how to get the uv rays into the flask, without having them
absorbed by the glass. If the source of the uv was placed inside the flask, then
it may make the system too warm. Or the UV light bulb may pop from the
super low pressure in the flask; (we really don't want to do that if possible : ).
The other is, once we actually obtain these conditions, how will we measure
the concentrations of the oxygen and ozone ? (I'm sure there is some really
simple solution for this second problem, like some kind of titration with another
gas or something, but the UV problem is daunting).
Is there anyway we can do this experiment and maintain the accurate
conditions of the the upper atmosphere (namely the right amount of UV)? Are
there any procedures we might not have considered to investigate the same
relationship? Please ANY help would be greatly appreciated.
																																																														Thank-you,
