			  "Interactive Vision"

Computers today are deaf, dumb, and blind. We would like them to be able to
recognize us, see where we are looking and pointing, and generally understand
their environment. The Perceptual Computing Group at the M.I.T. Media
Laboratory has been developing new vision technologies to make this kind
of interaction a reality.

Most vision research has been based on finding local features such as edges
or corners, rather than trying to take into account more global context.
Similarly, most vision work has been static, based on analyzing a small
number of still images. This focus on local, static methods has made most
vision systems inaccurate and unreliable.

By using a global eigenanalysis of sensor measurements and treating vision
as an ongoing, dynamic process, we have been able to build robust, real-time
vision systems. I will describe systems that reliably recognize people,
their expressions, and their hand gestures, and can over time develop
accurate 3-D models of their environment.

The University of Chicago AI Laboratory sponsors a series of
seminar speakers each academic quarter. These seminars are generally
of interest to those outside the department and are open to the
greater Chicago AI community. The department is located in Ryerson
Hall at 1100 E. 58th street on the main University of Chicago
quadrangle. Seminars are usually held in Ryerson 276.
