FOCUS
the weekly movie event

every Thurdsay night 8pm-1am
movie showing @ 9pm

Charybdis is pleased to offer artists a stimulating
"night at the movies."

Kick back on groovy sofas in an eclectic viewing room.
Surround sound? Try surround aesthetics.
Art on all of the walls and parts of the floor.
A kick-ass sound system.
And a GIANT movie screen.

No commercials forced on you before the show. Not even ads for other movies.
Instead, you'll get to see cartoons or other cool shorts before-hand.
Take part in directed group discussion, look at art, and enjoy all of the
many attractions in the space afterward.

Why buy a $4 soft drink when you can bring your own brew?
All of our refreshments are available for a donation...You pay what you feel
is right!
Why spend the climax of a flick jonesin' for a smoke, when you can fire it
up anytime you like?

An evening where cell phones and pagers are banned.
Bringing your own is allowed.
AND the best part is...everyone who comes gets to select what films we show
in the future!

Charybdis is a creatively comfortable place to kick back and definitely have
more fun watching great films.

By popular vote...The Director's Cut of Ridley Scott's classic Sci-Fi
spectacle

BLADE RUNNER
starting @ 9:00pm

A CHILLING, BOLD, MESMERIZING, FUTURISTIC DETECTIVE THRILLER.

Director: Ridley Scott
Starring: Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, Edward James Olmos, Daryl
Hannah, M. Emmet Walsh
(R, 117 min.)

When Ridley Scott's cut of Blade Runner was finally released in
1993, one had to wonder why the studio hadn't done it right the first
time--11 years earlier. This version is so much better, mostly because of
what's been eliminated (the ludicrous and redundant voice-over narration and
the phony happy ending) rather than what's been added (a bit more character
development and a brief unicorn dream). Star Harrison Ford originally
recorded the narration under duress at the insistence of Warner Bros.
executives who thought the story needed further "explanation"; he later
confessed that he thought if he did it badly they wouldn't use it. (Moral:
Never overestimate the taste of movie executives.) The movie's spectacular
futuristic vision of Los Angeles--a perpetually dark and rainy metropolis
that's the nightmare antithesis of "Sunny Southern California"--is still its
most seductive feature, an otherworldly atmosphere in which you can immerse
yourself. The movie's shadowy visual style, along with its classic
private-detective/murder-mystery plot line (with Ford on the trail of a
murderous android, or "replicant"), makes Blade Runner one of the few
science fiction pictures to legitimately claim a place in the film noir
tradition. And, as in the best noir, the sleuth discovers a whole lot more
(about himself and the people he encounters) than he anticipates....Loosely
based on Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

There is more to this film than just pulp. It works on so many
remarkable levels. The movie itself is a detective noir quest for the
meaning of life in a science fiction environment, but the story is a
commentary on what it means to be human and the questions each one of us
have about life, like: How long have I to live? Why do I have to die? What
happens when I die? Doesn't my maker care? Is this all merely an illusion?
Scott raises more questions here than he answers, and as a result, critics
are still debating the mysteries of this film today. In a sense, the
ambiguity of Blade Runner is the culprit of its success.
