The same thing really, speedtest.net will give results that are close enough for government work. To roll your own, as Geoff brought up, you would have to download and upload a bit and average it out. It's not really possible to come up with an absolute value either way and speedtest is used by enough people for a somewhat accurate reading. I mean if you are paying for 6mb service and consistantly get readings around 5.8mb, it's in the normal ballpark catagory. If you consistantly get readings like 2.5mb, you probably have a problem. As long as it comes close to getting what you are paying for, knowing the exact value is meaningless. -bruce bje@ripco.com
