I'm reluctant to use web-editors which claim to be WYSIWYG
particularly because I have yet to come across one which generates
good HTML compliant code with clean line breaks, an extensible design
to rival emacs, or the usability of emacs also. I have been doing
this since CERN days of yore and I'm using tools for editing HTML much
older than the mark-up language itself 8)
I do alot of back-end programming for web sites tho, database
interfaces, dynamic pages, search engines and a bazillion other little
back-end applications, so I'm more worried about the stability and the
compliance of the code I write, specifically since I play alot of
little tricks that wouldn't be possible with a WYSIWYG editor
generating the code.
Like alot of Internet associated technologies when you use the
commercial products you can get stuck 9 months or more behind the
curve cause you don't have access to source code and are possibly
dependant on the desires of the rest of the market(exactly where you
don't wanna be, you wanna be ahead of them) for additions and such. Of
course there are exceptions. WWW Serving is not one of those, with
FreeBSD or Linux for your server on a big enough PC("busiest" ftp site
in the world is ftp.cdrom.com which runs on a single pentium box
running FreeBSD) and Apache for your HTTPD since it has modules to do
perl, python, tcl cgi programming not only without forking but some
with the new FastCGI interface which screams. Apache has an API like
the Netscape and Microsoft servers(even a module that supposedly runs
those modules written for the MS ones) which works on ALL it's
supported machines unlike Netscapes Commerce Server which is oen fo
the worse servers I've ever seen. Then for a backend database
Postgres95 or MinervaSQL or Empress or whatever you desire which
already have API's for accessing them over the network for Java, Perl,
C etc... You'll be set to blow most of the other developers out of
the water with flexibility and speed and reliability also. And with
all that stuff being free...
Oi, sorry about the rant 8)
