The box's OS is more or less irrelevant. I'm testing the service and
how to integrate it into certain situations. I'd like some nodes to be
clients only and get data pushed onto them with no way of affecting the
main repository on Dropbox in any way and some nodes to be masters that
have more control over the Dropbox repository.

After some researching this Dropbox is a rather stupid service that only
recently allowed a node to only request certain directories in a repo
(which seems like pretty basic functionality). I have concluded (and I
could be wrong) that all nodes can make changes to the repo so if I want
nodes to be pull only, that has to be enforced at the endpoint. This
can certainly be done assuming endpoints act responsibly (i.e. trusted)
using proper file permissions to prevent screwups. I would have thought
however, after all these years in business, the leader in cyberlockers
would have implemented more sophisticated file syncing. I can't seem to
find this in their paid services. Maybe their "Teams" has this
capability but I jury rigged a solution around their free service
regardless.

None of this is rocket science. Perhaps some patent troll got a patent
on the functionality of rsync so Dropbox can't do that without paying
the dane geld.
