If you actually implement this in AFS, I will come over to your rat hole
and punch you directly in the balls.

Yes, I work with AFS daily.

SpiderOak might be able to do what you want; it's a hell of a lot more
full-featured than Dropbox, but I'm only backing up one machine to it,
not syncing. As a bonus, if they get hacked, your data doesn't (thanks,
client-side encryption).
