They had gotten sick and tired of Ameritech continuing to promise them new additional suburban dial up numbers and not delivering them (they had been promising them new suburban pops for several years, but kept pushing back the date), and they didn't want to deal with an outside service like FOCAL, so they decided to hell with it, and called it quits. Jen said at the time that they were just sick and tired of the bullshit, and wanted out of the business.
