Preamble
--------

    The Clout Project of /usr/group/chicago provides email services to
    the Chicago computer community. It is currently a two node system.
    One (nclout aka clout.chi.il.us) resides at the University of Chicago,
    Department of Computer Science. The other (homebru) is in the home of
    Dave Ihnat. Eventually we hope to have a clout node as a nearby phone
    call for everybody in the Chicago area.

    The Clout System Administrators' Committee is responsible for
    maintaining and upgrading the Clout distributed computer system.
    The Committee meets on the first Monday of every month, at a
    variety of locations. Meetings are open to all interested parties,
    but we do request that you notify the host if you plan to attend.

    If you have any questions or problems related to the Clout Project,
    send email to postmaster@clout.chi.il.us. If it is not possible
    to send email, or if there is a matter of urgency, you may contact
    the Sysadmin of the Month.

Minutes of the Clout Project System Administrators meeting of December
7th, 1992 held at the offices of BALR Corporation in Oakbrook, IL.

ATTENDANCE
----------

    Shannon Noe <noe@balr.com>
    Chris Ray <cray@balr.com>
    Gerry Swetsky <lisbon@vpnet.chi.il.us>
    Greg Gulik <greg@gagme.chi.il.us>
    Mike Beirne <beirne@limerick.chi.il.us>
    Gareth Newfield <gareth@metl.chi.il.us>

Agenda Items
------------

* Trailblazer woes
    We discussed Telebit Trailblazer+ problems talking to other PEP
    modems, especially WorldBlazers. Allegedly the TB+ has a hard-
    ware problem in the DSP which Telebit had been trying to correct
    in software, but wasn't corrected until the WorldBlazer.

* Possible drive donation
    One of the Admins may donate a 300 MB SCSI drive to the Clout
    Project. This is contingent on several things.

* Clout stats
    Misuse of clout was discussed. One possibility is trying to trace
    the actual recipients of large E-mail packets. It was decided to
    not attempt to trace these persons, but instead to try and make
    people aware that clout is a finite resource. We still need a
    volunteer to do this.

* Dead sites
    The Administrators will also try to figure out what the dead sites
    are. Also of interest are the sites which pick up their mail
    infrequently. Greg will talk to Russell concerning these sites
    and Shannon will look into the sites that let a lot of mail sit
    on clout for extended periods. Chris Ray will also install tua
    on clout and see what kinds of additional information that will
    give us.

* The Uucp Mapping Project
    Larry Snyder may be giving up his role in the Uucp Mapping Pro-
    ject. If that is the case, Mike Beirne has volunteered to take
    it over.

* Privacy issue
    It was decided to remove the names and phone numbers of clout
    clients from clout uucp map. The justification for this is that
    it is not only a privacy issue and redundant, but the Admins can
    get that information easily anyway as it resides in our files.

* Memory leak
    There is a confirmed smail memory leak. It was decided to revert
    back to Smail-3.1.27 and see if that leaks as well. We will also
    send a note to the smail3 mailing list asking the group if they
    are aware of such a leak. Greg will see to this.

* Gagme clout node
    Greg reminded us of the proposed Gagme clout node idea. The Admins
    decided to kill the idea because it will serve no useful purpose.

* Postmaster of the month
    Greg Gulik (except for Dec 13-20, which will be Russell)

* Next meeting
    Gerry Swetsky's home in Villa Park on 01/04/93
