Space is almost as tight on Dave Ihnat's >machine too. Good news, and bad news. This summer the homebru/clout node was changed from a 3b1 with a 140Mb disk--which, I believe, was what they were referring to when mentioning the tight disk space--to a 386/33 with two 340Mb SCSI drives. (As soon as I have the spare change, it's going to a 486...) This means that, by and large, spool space isn't an issue on that node. (On the other hand, gratuitous spool-space hogging will merit a short discussion with Guido.) Now, the bad news. Although homebru/clout is fairly well off for disk space, as it was the first node established it has the earliest of the donated modems-- a Telebit Trailblazer from Telebit Corp. (again, thank you!) This was the cat's meow in Unix high-speed modems, and at 19.2Kbps in PEP mode with another Telebit is still the fastest option available. Unfortunately, Telebit didn't get their PEP accepted as the CCITT standard, and we don't (yet) have any V.32 modems on this node. So most people--those who don't have a TB--can only connect to this node at 2.4Kbps. Secondly, most mail will still be routed down to the UofC clout node, since it's directly on the Internet, and *that* machine, as noted, *does* have some disk space restrictions. So why would you choose to be on the homebru/clout node, or be placed there, as opposed to directly on the UofC node? Several reasons. First, the modem restriction is short-term; soon there will be a V.42bis modem on one of the two lines into the machine, while the other will remain a Telebit for those who have them. Secondly, telephone costs. If you fall within a cheaper IBT calling zone with homebru/clout than UofC/clout, it's going to save you $$$. The two machines talk on demand, and transfer at 19.2, so any added delay in forwarding mail is marginal. That's all; otherwise, a good overview, Mike. Thanks, and thanks to the Admin group in general for a good job! La Monte and I handled this for a couple of years, and it was no picnic.
