Being an inquiring mind that wants to know, I was in touch with some station 
engineers about the digital wave coming, and the fact that their digital 
signals were a fraction of their analogs.

The following is typical of the responses I got back:

"The allowed ERP for all digital television stations are less than their 
analog if they operate both in the same VHF or UHF band.  The digital 
signals theoretically go father with less power then analog."I would debate 
that a digital signal has the ability to be recieved at a longer distance 
than an analog, but then, that's why I don'tget the big bucks to twist the 
knobs.
