They had an article about it two days ago and they didn't waste any time. The Tribune has gone paywall. John Kass now sits behind a paywall so I have even another reason not to click through on him. Maybe there's a contingent of old people who would pay to read John Kass but do they really know how to use a computer? Physically Kass seems to have morphed into how I remember Bob Greene looked and the subject matters the two discuss are similar. Is John Kass really Bob Greene? But I digress... Hot chicks at clubs is still free which is about the only real reporting the Trib does. All national and international news comes out of LA Times if you read the bylines. And they moved all their comments over to Facebook so no more drive-by comments from me? I always thought it was fun every now and then to contribute a zinger to some article the mouthbreathers weren't all over -- mostly in the business section. It felt kind of like posting to Usenet where hardly anyone actually reads it and no one cares. If someone submits a comment that no one reads is that considered a comment? At least on Facebook some bot on Facebook reads and catalogs your comment. Thus the corollary: If a tree falls in the forest and no one heard but the robot who went to saw it up into 2x4s, did it make a noise?

I'm not a web page critic and don't give two craps about any of their designs as long as they're half way usable which both Chicago papers have more or less been throughout their tenure in these intertubes. My concern is lack of content and how quickly I can scan through both the Trib and the Sun Times and see absolutely nothing to click through on -- except for those cute girls who keep staring back at me so seductively... Really. If the Trib wants to charge for content they need to produce some first. Now that I think of it, most of the time I click through an article only to read what the mouthbreathers have to drool about in the comment section -- much like watching the Jerry Springer show. Now I can't even read those -- even if I pay for a god damned subscription because they require a Facebook account.

Well, I do. If I can't find the information I'm looking for readily, I won't use it. >My concern is lack of content and how quickly I can scan through both the >Trib and the Sun Times and see absolutely nothing to click through on -- >except for those cute girls who keep staring back at me so seductively... >Really. As I recall, the Tribune's original Web site had an annoying registration scheme as well.

From the Tribune site at the end of what should be another mouthbreather free for all for the article entitled, "Obama to tour site of worst-ever Colorado wildfire" ---- The Tribune is using Facebook comments on stories. To post a comment, log into Facebook and then add your comment. To report spam or abuse, click the "X" in the upper right corner of the comment box. In certain circumstances, we will take down entire comment boards. Our commenting guidelines can be found here . ---- I've been registered with the Trib since they started registrations. Now who's the idiot again?

I do click through the Trib a lot so perhaps they're diverting heavier users already over some limit to their paywall site now. I'd clear my cache to test this out buy I forgot most of the passwords and/or usernames on the other sites I go to so it isn't worth the bother.

Each of the two earlier versions of the Web site required registration for much of the site as well. I haven't looked, but I assume Trib did the same thing as last time, requiring new credentials for the new version of the site, so users who were already registered had to do so again.

For awhile I've had facebook.com as an SOA on my DNS server which means all fecebook.com requests got bounced to one of my servers because I wanted nothing to do with that outfit. This works well and you'd be amazed at how many doo hickeys phone home for god knows what to facebook.com whenever you download a site. Anyway, I was browsing the Trib on my laptop which uses a public DNS server and I saw the comments and it looks like some fancy scripting originating from the real facebook.com. The comments do get displayed. I thought the Trib was using facebook for only user validation -- not to manage and serve comments which sometimes can be the most entertaining and insightful aspect of an online newspaper if done right. Facebook now pwns the Tribune corporation.
