I don't watch much TV anymore (not that I'm a snob about it) but today I watched John McCain's speech on channel 11. Chicago Tonight followed the speech so I kept the TV on. What was strange is that now they have commercial breaks for Bank of America and to a lesser extent Allstate. When did the start the commercial breaks and does this mean that WTTW got rid of the begathons? I think it's been a couple of years since I watched a program on WTTW.

One time I read WTTW tracked down all 17 of their regular viewers and those who expressed an opinion said they didn't mind if a few commercials were thrown in here and there, mostly to break up the monotony. As far as I know they still have the begathons, but are hiding them, usually buried in special presentations. My wife got caught up recently in some "remember when" special, it's just a bunch of still photographs and 8mm shorts from some period, narrated by some old farts. The problem is, it appeared to be filmed in real time. After six months of watching it 4 hours a night, they only got up to like "the spring of 1948" which was disappointing to her since the show started with "January 1948". She made some remark about those times not being as interesting as they made it out to be and started watching Mad Men instead. -bruce bje@ripco.com
