Mars Probe Talks, "Ethel Merman Is Antichrist"

CHICAGO- Breaking a frustrating 48 hours of silence, the NASA Mars probe,
Polar Lander, sent back a cryptic message late Sunday night.

"Ethel Merman is the antichrist," is the only definitive communication
relayed by the probe.  In a staccato, metallic voice, the probe uttered the
statement and faded into static and then back to an eerie silence.

The $165 million lander was supposed to use its ultra high frequency antenna
to make contact with the Mars Global Surveyor satellite orbiting the planet
during a brief, six-minute communications window, but it remained silent, as
it has since Friday, when it was scheduled to land on Mars at 3 p.m. EST
(2000 GMT).

"Bizarre and unexpected is an understatement," said NASA spokesman, Richard
Cook.  "This verbal relay is far more mysterious and troubling than the
silence and disappearance of previous probes," he added, referring to the
failure this past September of the Climate Orbiter mission.

Tony Award-winning musical comedy entertainer Ethel Merman, famous for her
booming voice and extravagant style, died in 1984.

Officials at the Pentagon and the White House have declined comment until
NASA investigators furnish more details about the incident.
