FLATWATER CLASSIC PADDLE AND PEDAL VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!! WHEN Sunday, August 7, 2005 TIME Times vary depending on the location assigned. WHERE Locations Vary: Start Line at Addison, throughout course, and Finish Line at 18th Street. Some descriptions below. CONTACT Contact Cynthia at Friends offices 312) 939-0490, ext. 13 or via email at cfox@chicagoriver.org. Yet again, Friends of the Chicago River is looking for boatloads of people with an interest in the Chicago River to volunteer for our 6th annual Chicago River Flatwater Classic Paddle & Pedal. As usual, this is my plea to the masses for help to fill one of our 160 different jobs that vary from bridge spotters to man one of 12 bridges throughout the course, parking lot attendants, registration helpers, corporate check-in volunteers, and MUCH, MUCH MORE! Perks of the Job Volunteers receive a volunteer T-shirt to wear the day of the race, snacks and much more! (Not to mention the undying adoration of race participants, Friends' staff and other friends of the Chicago River!) Specific Volunteer Needs Bridge Spotters Needed -- It is a great way to watch the race. Bring a friend (makes bathroom breaks a lot less stressful). Bring lawn chairs, an umbrella for the sun (there WILL be NO rain), boom box and your favorite music, sun block, cooler (sorry no alcohol), your favorite snacks, lunch, binoculars, a good book for before the first racer gets to your bridge. There are 13 bridges throughout the course that you and your buddies can hang out at to be our "eyes in the sky" for the event. If you are interested in being a bridge spotter, just reply back to this email with your chosen bridge. Bridges available that require volunteers are: Belmont, Western, Diversey, Damen, Fullerton, Ashland, Elston/Courtland R/R Bridge, North Avenue, Cherry Street R/R Bridge, Chicago, Grand, Madison, Van Buren and Roosevelt. Webster has been claimed by a volunteer since February! Volunteers for the Flatwater Friends of the Chicago River produces fun events that bring the public out to explore the wonders of the Chicago River. There are many things taken into consideration that happen behind the scenes to ensure that events are both educational and safe. With the Flatwater Classic, Friends' has a comprehensive plan that accounts for the safety of all participants and ease of participating in the event with regard to check-in and registration. To make all of the many parts of the event come together, we require a large group of people to volunteer for this event ensure that our volunteer crews are knowledgeable and many pairs of eyes are on the river throughout the entire course. This year, Friends' staff and volunteer crew leaders will oversee over 160 volunteer jobs for the Flatwater Classic to ensure that all participants are monitored both on the water and on land. WE NEED YOUR HELP!! If you are looking for something fun to do along the Chicago River, volunteer for this exciting event by contacting me at Friends' offices at (312) 939-0490 ext. 13 or via email at cfox@chicagoriver.org to learn about what opportunities are still available. Thanks a ton in advance! Cynthia Cynthia Fox, Manager of Stewardship and Volunteer Programs Friends of the Chicago River 407 S.
