There's a huge building, empty since 1996, a couple of blocks south of
where you work. I wonder why no one's put it up on eBay.

they had a sign up on it that it was going to be a bank a couple summers
ago, but nothing ever happened with it.

it was sold at auction 2 years ago, but then didn't close was the last I
remember.

That's the building.

For historic reasons I don't understand, it's owned by the General
Services Administration and not the post office. While post offices in
court houses or locations that had been court houses, like Loop Station,
are GSA facilities, processing plants shouldn't have been.

A number of years ago, GSA set up a bidding system guaranteed to fail
because the bidders weren't prequalified in that they could obtain financing
to complete the project, let alone complete the sale. A man known to
have bid on a number of prominent properties in recent years in other
countries was the high bidder, and GSA accepted the bid, even though the
man had a history of not completing purchases.

The bidding was not set up that the second highest bidder could be
declared the winner when the highest bidder failed to complete the purchase.

Given what the post office spent to build the new plant across the street,
I believe it would have been cheaper if they'd stayed, building the truck
apron they needed over the Eisenhower. Remember, the new facility is
built entirely on railroad air rights, instead of finding an adequate
vacant industrial parcel on the west side of which we have no shortage of.
