Hola:

para poner un gif en tu estacion con xloadimage debes hacer:

xloadimage -fullscreen -onroot portada.gif

(en el caso de que se llame portada.gif). Tambien puedes a~adirle mas opciones,
por ejemplo si la imagen es muy oscura puedes arreglarlo con -gamma n
siendo n > 1 para aclarar (ej. -gamma 1.5). Si deseas iniciarlo cada vez que
entras a la maquina, despues de reconocer que es un xterm, colocas lo anterior
en background.

ej:

if [$TERM -eq xterm] then
   xloadimage -fullscreen -onroot portada.gif &
fi
