Over the weekend, additional variants of the worm were discovered bringing the total count to 19. One of these variants falsely claimed to come from Symantec technical support. As a result of this, we are asking that you open your news bulletins in text-only format, rather than in HTML format. This will ensure that any link seen in this newsletter has not been tampered with. We are also evaluating ways to digitally sign these news bulletins to ensure their authenticity. Finally, it has been discovered that the latest variant, VBS.LoveLetter.S, is not being detected with the 5/5/00 virus definitions. A new set of definitions was released today that will detect all variants of this worm. Run LiveUpdate to update your virus definitions." De http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/vbs.loveletter.alert.html: "The Symantec AntiVirus Research Center currently detects the following variants of VBS.LoveLetter.A: VBS.LoveLetter.A (LoveLetter) VBS.LoveLetter.B (Lithuanian) VBS.LoveLetter.C (VeryFunny) VBS.LoveLetter.D (BugFix) VBS.LoveLetter.E (MothersDay) VBS.LoveLetter.F (VirusWarning) VBS.LoveLetter.G (Virus ALERT!!!) VBS.LoveLetter.H (No Comments) VBS.LoveLetter.I (Important! Read carefully!!) VBS.LoveLetter.J VBS.LoveLetter.K VBS.LoveLetter.L (I Can't Believe This!!) VBS.LoveLetter.M (Arab Air) VBS.LoveLetter.N (Variant Test) VBS.LoveLetter.O (same as variant A) VBS.LoveLetter.P (Yeah Yeah) VBS.LoveLetter.Q (LOOK!) VBS.LoveLetter.R (Bewerbung) VBS.LoveLetter.S (same as variant A) The variant named VBS.LoveLetter.G (Virus ALERT!!!) that includes the subject line "Virus ALERT!!!" poses as a message from Symantec technical support. In addition to damage caused by the LoveLetter, VBS.LoveLetter.G (Virus ALERT!!!) deletes .bat and .com files. This message is NOT being distributed by Symantec and should be deleted immediately."
