Although the SID factor does come into play, if you are using it for the
reason you specify (restoring after a hard drive crash), this shouldn't be
an issue, as the original machine that had the SID is gone at that point.

I should note that the latest release of Ghost also comes with a separate
utility to change SIDs.  We have used this successfully on several PCs now.
 Also, just as a direct answer to the later part of your question, yes, we
are able to successfully clone NT 4 hard drives (FAT or NTFS) without
problems.
