The Torch is a new humanist magazine which has appeared
in Denmark. Its goal is to counter the Absolutism and Moralism
which appear to be the dominant trend of today's politics -
including the media manipulations, law and order emphasis
and so forth. How would we counter these trends?
Well, the answer is this case is an epistemologically
founded humanism: a humanism based on tolerance, a tolerance
based on cultural relativism, and a cultural relativism based on
education.
As is explained in our Humanist Manifesto:
"The basis of a viable tolerance can only be the realisation that any
any
absolute truth or objectivism is in direct contradiction to the facts of
cultural history. Also, such ideas must be viewed as extremely dubious
in the
light of the development of natural sciences towards an understanding of
reality as being essentially dependent of the observer.
Therefore we must insist that the fall of objectivism has consequences,
at the
very least in the academic world. However, relativism, immediately
resulting,
does in no way lead to chaos or nihilism in philosophy, science or
politics,
but rather to pragmatic, decent consideration and honest understanding
without
prejudical emphasis on one's own idiosyncrasies whether private or
cultural, as
if they were in any way Absolute Truths. This does certainly not prevent
all
conflicts of any kind but it is a necessary prerequisite for
understanding any
conflict and thereby optimizing the chances of solving it.
So let us fight for a university devoted to education instead of the
present
uninterested career factory. And let us no longer allow culturally
chauvinistic
deintellectualization without counterargument but rather let us openly
insist
on knowledge, tolerance and relativism within as well as outside the
auditorium. "
The English version of The Torch may be found at

contains the
Manifesto as well
as numerous articles on science and epistemology, political and social
comment as well as the conceptual foundations of an agressive modern
humanism - and a detailed documentation of the totalitarian trends of
Danish and European politics the last year.
