Hmmm, it seems like we aren't the only ones who had a nice little
hierarchy that is now being spammed to pieces.  Here's a checkgroups
that arrived in my mailbox today...

     Some years ago a bunch of control messages for manawatu.* escaped into 
     the wide world and we've been spammed ever since.

     Quite simply, if you have any manawatu.* groups and you're not in New
     Zealand, we don't want you carrying them and we're going to start
     enforcing that by sending out autocancels for any item crossposted into
     our hierarchy from outside the area, starting next week. This should help
     out a lot of other regional hierarchies, as such crap is invariably
     crossposted to hell and back. 

     To that end, here's the latest Manawatu.* checkgroups:

   manawatu.cancel Anything posted to this or any other manawatu group will be CANCELLED!

I am not suggesting that this is what we should do!  It's just an
intriguing, albeit quixotic, attempt to solve the problem...
