CALL FOR CONTEST ENTRIES


The deadline for entering the Ohio Professional Writers annual communications
contest is December 14, 1996. Entries are to have been published or broadcast
between December 1, 1995 and November 30, 1996. The cost for entering this
contest is $10 for the first entry and $4 for each entry thereafter.

There are 91 categories, including print media, photography, electronic media,
advertising, public relations, speeches, achievement, and books. There are
subcategories for big and small daily newspapers, big and small weekly
newspapers, general or specialized newspapers, radio, television, for-profit
and non-profit agencies.

This contest is open to all writers in Ohio, but they must have their dues paid
in Ohio Professional Writers/National Federation of Press Women. First-place
entries at the state level are forwarded to NFPW for automatic entry in the
national communications contest. State awards will be presented at OPW's spring
meeting, and the national awards will be presented at the national convention
in June in Minneapolis, MN

In addition, there is a special human interest category that honors a charter
member, the late Helen Waterhouse of Akron. This is a state category and the
winner does not go on the national.

By joining OPW/NFPW,  you become involved in a huge network of communicators
nationwide. You can apply for scholarships and funds for special workshops to
help you in continuing education courses for career improvement. Not only do
you have the opportunity to enter the communications contest, you can also help
high school and college students learn the field of communications.

OPW holds educational meetings in the spring and in the fall. NFPW convention
is in June. Workshops at these gatherings help us learn about communications
for tomorrow. All of this for $60 a year.
