If you want InterNet access, get a 14400-baud modem with V.42bis data compression, and get some SLIP software and an account on a SLIP provider. With the data compression, you can get speeds up to 57,600 baud. This is poor man's EtherNet. It works for me! SLIP stands for Serial Line Internet Protocol...which I guess is basically TCP/IP over a serial (modem) line.
