As some of you may know, the librarians of the Engineering and Science Library and the Mellon Institute Library have been investigating the Landolt Bornstein series. After much deliberation, we have agreed to cancel this series. This does not mean we will stop receiving Landolt Bornstein volumes. We will continue to purchase those volumes that best meet the research needs of Carnegie Mellon, particularly in the areas of semiconductors and magnetic properties. In the coming years, if there is a volume that you feel the libraries should have, but we have not yet purchased, please contact your liaison librarian. Though this is an important reference series, we feel that this cancellation is warranted. Many highly regarded engineering and science libraries have already cancelled this title, due to its exorbitant price. For example, peer institutions such as the University of Pennsylvania, Case Western Reserve University, Cornell University, and Rutgers University have not carried this title for some time. Massachusetts Institute of Technology and California Institute of Technology follow the same ordering plan that we will implement, by purchasing only those volumes that are needed by their researchers. We will continue to investigate any web based product that Landolt Bornstein develops. We will set aside half of the funds from this cancellation for Landolt Bornstein volume purchases. We will re-evaluate this amount as time passes, adding to it if necessary. The remainder of the funds will be used to purchase SciFinder Scholar, and other electronic resources to be determined later. SciFinder Scholar is a researching tool developed by STN, used for searching Chemical Abstracts and other chemical databases. With SciFinder Scholar, users can access the full Chemical Abstracts database 24 hours a day. It includes such features as a substructure searching module and a reaction searching tool. For more information on SciFinder Scholar, visit http://www.cas.org/SCIFINDER/SCHOLAR/index.html . If you have any questions about this decision, please contact your liaison librarian. Thank you for your support in the libraries.
