****************** ROBOTICS INSTITUTE SEMINAR SERIES ****************** Marsupial Robots Robin Murphy Perceptual Robotics Laboratory Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering University of South Florida Adamson Wing, Baker Hall Talk 3:30 pm Refreshments 3:15 pm Abstract This talk will discuss marsupial-style societies of cooperating heterogeneous mobile robots. Marsupial robots take their name from kangaroos and opossums, where mothers carry their young in protective pouches. They are being considered for tactical military operations, planetary exploration, and urban search and rescue (USAR), and also offer an excellent test-bed for investigating physical and software heterogeneity. The talk will cover the fundamental research issues in marsupial societies, including the four roles of a marsupial mother relative to the daughter (Courier, Coach, Messenger, and Manager). Results and lessons learned from testing with the USF marsupial team of Silver Bullet and Bujold in the tactical military and USAR domains will also be presented. Speaker Biography Robin Roberson Murphy received a B.M.E. in mechanical engineering, a M.S. and Ph.D in computer science (minor: Computer Integrated Manufacturing Systems) in 1980, 1989, and 1992, respectively, from Georgia Tech, where she was a Rockwell International Doctoral Fellow. From 1992 to 1998, she was an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences at the Colorado School of Mines. Since 1998, she has been an associate professor in Computer Science and Engineering at the University of South Florida with a joint appointment in Cognitive Psychology. Her textbook, "Introduction to AI Robotics," for the MIT Press, is scheduled for publication in Aug, 00. She also serves as Secretary of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society.
