*** NOTE: THIS APPLIES FOR UNDERGRAD T/A'S TOO!!!*** ATTENTION: ALL SPRING 2000 TA'S AND TI'S All ECE MS or PhD International students whose "native" language is "not" English, who have not taken the ITA test AND who plan to TA or TI in the SPRING 2000, are required to register for the NOVEMBER ITA test. ITA TESTING: November 8 - 19 REGISTRATION REQUIRED: October 18 - November 5 CONTACT: eslhelp@andrew or call 8-4979 LATE FEE CHARGE: The ICC will now charge a $25 late fee for last minute requests "after" the November ITA testing week for students who missed the November tests and discover that they will need to be a TA or TI in the Spring 2000. The International Teaching Assistant (ITA) Test will be offered November 8 to November 19. Both Pennsylvania State Law (English Fluency in Higher Education Law) and Carnegie Mellon policy require that all non-native speakers pass the ITA Test before they can work as teaching assistants. Any graduate student whose first language is not English and who plans on working as a TA during the spring semester needs to take the ITA Test in November. Please note that any nonnative speaker of English who might be teaching in spring (that is, even if the graduate student has not yet been assigned a recitation section or lab) should take the test at this time. Departments should not wait until the beginning of the spring semester to tell students to be tested. ITA testing is both labor and time intensive; each test takes approximately 1 hour and requires the presence of a panel of raters. Each student taking the test will be asked to teach a sample lesson to a panel of raters. The test takes approximately thirty minutes, and students are asked to come back to our center for a thirty minute individual appointment for evaluation and advising on what work, if any, is required. Please note that TAs who have already taken the test and placed into the provisional category, Category Two, must continue with language and cultural work at our center every semester they are teaching until they retake the test and place into Category One. ITAs who are currently in Category Two should check with our office to see if they should retake the test at this time. The ITA Test is offered three times each year: November, April and July. Students may not take the test in two consecutive semesters unless they complete the required language work. For example, if a student takes (and does not receive a Category 1 score) the test in July, he or she must complete the required language work before retaking the test in November. Students who want to register for the ITA Test this semester should call the ICC, x8-4979. Students can begin to register October 18. The deadline for registration is November 5.
