18-879: AGENTS AND DISTRIBUTED DECISION PROCESSES Spring, 2001 9 or 12 units Instructor: Sarosh Talukdar Time: to be decided Large, widely distributed systems, such as traffic networks, telecommunication networks and the electric grid, are operated by thousands, sometimes millions, of agents (decision-makers, such as relays, optimization programs and humans). This course will cover the processes by which these agents make decisions. Topics include: agent types, case-studies of large systems, game theory, the dynamics of decision-making (attractors, Nash equilibria, Pareto optimality), organization theory, and heuristics for improving the speed and quality of distributed decisions. All participants will be assigned seminal papers to read and present in class. In addition, participants taking the class for 12 units, will be assigned simple but important decision problems that they will be expected to tackle as projects. Prerequisites: graduate standing or permission of the instructor.
