18-726: SOC Design Methodologies

Embedded systems represent an important segment of today's
electronic industry. Examples of such systems can be found
        everywhere: communication systems, medical instrumentation,
process control, automotive engine control units, multimedia.
While there has been notable growth in the use and application
of these systems, the design process of embedded systems has
become increasingly difficult due to the increasing design
        complexity and shortening time-to-market.

This course has two main objectives: 1) to define and present
the basics of SOC design methodologies and 2) to review hot
topics in the design of embedded systems and to identify
promising directions for future research. Topics to be covered
include: specification & modeling, communication-based design,
and validation & performance analysis of embedded systems.

This is essentially a project-oriented class which will be
based on a collection of selected papers relevant to system-level
design of embedded applications. In addition to completing all
reading assignments, the course requirement consists of a few
homework assignments, a final project and a class presentation
        of the final project.

In terms of prerequisites, logic and high-level synthesis and
optimization, basic probability theory concepts, and basic VLSI
        design knowledge are essential.
