Compaq Computer Corporation's, Alpha Development Group has been
developing and
delivering the fastest microprocessors in the world since the Alpha
architecture's inception in 1992 when the group was part of Digital
Equipment Corporation. Building on Digital's technology and
microprocessor performance success, expertise and leadership in CISC
computing, the team broke new ground and established a new, higher
standard for RISC processors with the first Alpha. We've been improving
on that record with every generation. The Alpha Development Group is
the leader in high-performance 64-bit computing. We're looking for
engineers who can keep us in the lead for a long time to come!!

Our combined engineering organization is responsible for architecture
and silicon design for Alpha CPU's and associated peripheral components,
and is supported by our CAD, software and test organizations.

Circuit Design: Youre in the drivers seat: Design the
next-generation Alpha microprocessors, core logic, and peripheral
chips. As a full-custom CMOS VLSI designer, youll participate in all
aspects of microprocessor design from chip architecture through circuit
design. See your ideas turn into silicon through modeling, schematic
design, circuit analysis, layout direction, and electrical verification
using state-of-the-art CAD tools. Custom analog CMOS design
opportunities involve phase-locked loop design, package modeling, I/O
cell design, and signal-integrity analysis. Semi-custom designers,
working on our core logic interface and memory subsystem chips, are
responsible for system architecture, logic design, modeling, synthesis,
and timing verification using industry-standard tools such as Verilog
and Synopsys.
SKILLS: BS/MS/PhD EE/Comp.Engr..

CAD Tool Design & Development: Apply your creativity along with
algorithm and data structure theory to develop state-of-the-art CAD
software used to design and test our high-performance Alpha
Microprocessors. Youll be designing and implementing leading-edge
tools in the areas of logic, architecture, & circuit simulation; circuit
synthesis; timing and physical analysis; logic and formal verification;
graphical interface technology; chip database; and test & DFT
technology. Positions involve collaboration with Alpha designers and
architects to define new CAD solutions focused on high-performance
design.
SKILLS: BS/MS/PhD CS/EE/Comp.Engr

Architectural/Functional Verification:

Youll enjoy all the benefits of leading a dual life- not only as a
verification and architecture contributor, but also as a member of a
leading-edge Alpha chip development team- working closely with system
architects and logic designers to uncover bugs and help lead the project
to success. You wont get bored doing just hardware or just software.
Instead, youll combine your architecture, logic design, software, and
testing strategy skills to devise innovative ways to shake out bugs in
all the nooks and crannies of these complicated chips.

Your diverse background and experience will allow you to consider new
perspectives for applying simulation, debugging, functional coverage
analysis, and formal proof techniques using (and expanding) our
extensive state-of-the-art verification tool suite. Dig deeper for the
unstimulated cross-products that harbor those pesky bugs. And, with an
eagerness for learning, youll be swimming in a rich environment of
lectures, courses, and of course, web access!

As a leader, technical contributor, or tool crafter, youll be a vital
part of this exciting development team.
SKILLS: BS/MS CS/EE/Comp.Engr.

VLSI Test Development Engineering: Put us to the test and make chips
come to life! Many exciting job opportunities are available for you in
the area of Alpha microprocessor test, where you could participate in
one of two exciting worlds to ensure perfection in testing
state-of-the-art Alpha designs: either help architect, implement, and
leverage advanced design-for-test techniques and their equivalent logic;
or, work on prototype debugging and manufacturing test of newly minted
designs. If youre involved in the first world, you might be devising
new test architectures, writing RTL code, or generating manufacturing
test coverage by running ATPG tools or writing focused tests in Alpha
assembly language. Alternatively, you could make sure that the
functions and complex clocking schemes of the Alpha operate properly,
assuring that all aspects of Alpha can be effectively tested using our
leading-edge automated test equipment (ATE). Regardless of which world
youre in, youll develop testability strategies as a member of an
advanced development chip design team, creating innovative tools and
processes to shape the future of VLSI test development engineering in
our world-class IC design operation!
SKILLS: BS/MS EE/Comp.Engr.

TOPGUN Organization

Hit the afterburners with TOPGUN in the Alpha Development Group!
Were looking for many talented engineers to drive the worlds highest
performance microprocessors into the future generations of semiconductor
technologies. In TOPGUN youll adapt the industry-leading alpha
microprocessor to ride the technology wave to yet higher performance
levels. Create microprocessors in technologies that your friends are
still dreaming about, then see your product shipping in less time than
it takes for others to get started.

Do you have the skills and desire to make your mark? If youre ready
for the high g acceleration of picosecond digital logic, the challenge
of analog design in a hostile environment of roaring digital noise, or
the thrill of squeezing your cache into a needles eye, then TOPGUN is
the place for you.

MS or PhD in EE, physics, or related discipline required. Fundamental
understanding of digital and/or analog circuit operation is essential.
Knowledge of device physics and CMOS technology as well as the
interaction with VLSI circuits is strongly preferred.

Distributed Application Software Developer: The Alpha CAD Shared
Services group is looking for system software developers to take a
leadership role in developing a distributed job management service to
support massively parallel verification of a microprocessor design
project. The work includes designing a methodology for optimizing use
of corporate hardware resources and enhancing existing applications to
provide the required functionality. Looking for a BS/MS in Computer
Science or Comp.Engr.
